In 1996 several Martial Artists from Northern Ireland travelled to Ashford to learn combat sombo from Martin Clarke. Impressed at his grasp of the Russian sombo wrestling, Judo and Jujitsu they formed formed a close relationship and began to attend IBF events in England. The first ever taihojutsu club in Northern Ireland became members of the IBF as did clubs in Belfast, Holywood, Ballyclare and Lisburn and Enniskillen. The IBF (Northern Ireland) strives to retain the highest standards in grappling and encourages lifelong pursuit of martial arts, rather than quick easy wins. Subsequently members of the club have enjoyed tremendous success locally and internationally in a variety of martial art disciplines. The nature of the club has led to a solid core of members who strive to uphold the principles of Budo.
IBFNI organises a number of local events each year, but also participates internationally.
